The Manhattan Project

From the humble beginnings of trial and error, of exploration, of horrific excursions into questionable creations, some cocktails have withstood the test of time, and stand proud before us today as staples of the bar scene. The Manhattan Cocktail is such one. In it's early days though things were not as smooth sailing. Through a combination of Rye beginnings and the curse of Prohibition, this particular whiskey concoction was not always been so whiskey forward.
It was in fact Sweet Vermouth dominate until after Prohibition drew it's final cursed breath. Some factors such as a spicy Rye grains, and sup-par illegal still prohibition-era whiskies meant something was needed to balance the rough edges. 1934 was the first documented recipe where the Whiskey of choice took front and center as the dominate alcohol in this cocktail.
